A thriving population of wild deer.
The deer population on the slopes of Barchuilla Commons has increased dramatically in recent years and we now see young deer on a daily basis as they pass through our gardens en route to the lower fields. They follow the exact same route every morning and return to the uplands again later in the day. The destruction if these lower slopes will drive these beautiful animals out of our area forever.
One of the only lizzard populations in Ireland.
Kilmacanogue boasts one of the few populations of lizzards in Ireland. Most people are amazed to hear that we have lizzards in this country but indeed these tiny reptiles can be seen along the concrete roadway leading up to the commons, the very site of the proposed roadway. Lizzards can also be found on Bray Head, and in the Burren in County Clare. We photographed this little fellow basking in the sunshine and he made no attempt to flee from our prying camera. His unique population stands absolutely no chance of survival if this road goes ahead.
